Every AAA buyer eventually faces the same question: LR03, R03P or R03? They all fit the same compartment, but they are three different products with three different costs. This is the buying guide — the numbers, the tier logic, and the stocking rule buyers use.
The short answer
LR03 is the alkaline tier — best capacity, best shelf life, highest price. R03P is the heavy duty mid tier. R03 is carbon zinc — the entry price point. If the device costs more than the battery, fit LR03; if the battery costs more than the device, fit R03.
Full comparison
| LR03 (alkaline) | R03P (heavy duty) | R03 (carbon zinc) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 1.5 V | 1.5 V | 1.5 V |
| Size | 10.4 × 44.5 mm | 10.4 × 44.5 mm | 10.4 × 44.5 mm |
| Typical capacity | 800–1,200 mAh | ~500–800 mAh | ~300–400 mAh |
| Weight | ~11.5 g | ~10.5 g | ~10 g |
| Working temperature | −10 ~ 50 °C | −5 ~ 45 °C | −5 ~ 45 °C |
| Retail price position | Premium | Mid | Entry |
| Typical lifetime (remote) | 12–24 months | 8–15 months | 5–10 months |
The two-letter code is printed on the can — LR = alkaline, R = carbon zinc. Any seller that mixes them on one price rack is either confused or optimistic.
What actually changes with the tier
- Capacity under load. For the same TV remote, an LR03 outlasts an R03 roughly 3× in real drain tests — better yet, it holds voltage instead of sagging at the end of life.
- Shelf life. Alkaline holds inside 5 years; carbon zinc realistically 2–3 with heavier self-discharge.
- Leak resistance. LR03 in laser-sealed cans is the safe choice for devices you cannot afford to replace — clocks, thermostats, smoke detectors.
- Price per unit — and margin. Carbon zinc is the lowest cost per piece, which is why racks of value packs (2S/4S shrink) still exist in every market.
The stocking rule for retailers and importers
- One premium line — LR03 2BP/4BP blister for supermarkets and pharmacy shelves (the volume seller in Western Europe, US and Japan).
- One value line — R03 2S/4S shrink for discounters, party shops and price-driven markets.
- R03P sparingly — as the promotional middle: use it where the pack deal needs a “medium” price without cannibalising your alkaline margin.
Placing 50 cartons across the three lines is standard practice — the MOQ is per order, not per tier, so you can test all three in a single container mix.

FAQ for buyers
Is R03P the same as LR03? No. Same size, different chemistry and capacity. R03P is a “heavy duty” zinc-carbon derivative — better than plain R03, still well below alkaline.
Which tier do big retailers prefer for private label? Recently the shelf mix runs ~70% alkaline / ~30% value. Alkaline carries the brand; the value tier sells the household volume.
Can I order the three tiers in one container? Yes — a single 50-carton order can mix tiers and pack types; the quote shows the price per carton per line.
Do you test capacity per batch? Yes — every production batch runs capacity, internal-resistance and discharge sampling; test reports ship with wholesale orders on request.
Start with the LR03 spec page, then get a wholesale quote or ask the factory for the three-tier price ladder.
