You can bring batteries on a plane — almost all consumer batteries, in fact. The confusion comes from the lithium rules, which are stricter than the rest. Here is the plain-language version that follows the US TSA rules and the international IATA-DGR framework.
Can you bring AA batteries on a plane?
Yes. Alkaline, carbon-zinc, button and zinc-air cells — AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, CR2032 — are allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage. The stricter rules apply only to rechargeable lithium batteries and powerbanks, which must travel in carry-on only. Non-rechargeable lithium coin cells may be checked if packed or installed in a device.
| Battery | Carry-on | Checked bag |
|---|---|---|
| Alkaline AA / AAA / C / D / 9V | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Carbon zinc AA / AAA | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Button cells (CR2032, LR44, LR41…) | ✅ Yes (installed or spare) | ✅ Yes (installed or spare) |
| Zinc-air hearing-aid cells | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Lithium coin cells (CR series, 3V) | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes — keep in original packaging |
| Lithium batteries / power banks | ✅ Yes (carry-on required) | ❌ No (checked bags) |
The line that matters: a rechargeable lithium battery or power bank can never go in a checked bag. Non-rechargeable lithium coin cells (CR2032 and friends) are permitted in checked baggage when carried in the original packaging or the device.
The rule most people miss
Spare batteries must be protected from short circuits — original packaging, a closed case, or tape over the terminals. It is not a formality: a shorted cell in a bag is how most battery incidents start.
The 100 × 160 mm example: flat and installed
Lithium coin cells travel fine because they are enclosed. If you carry loose CR2032 spares, keep them in the child-resistant card they came in — the pack is the correct packaging by the rules.
What this means for battery buyers
If your product ships to customers by air, the UN38.3 transport test report is the document carriers ask for before accepting lithium cargo. We issue it per shipment — see the transport compliance page → or read how lithium button cells ship safely →.
Three-line summary
- Consumer primary batteries: carry-on or checked, fine.
- Rechargeable lithium (power banks, Li-ion packs): carry-on only.
- Spares: protected against short circuits, always.
