AA and AAA are the two most common cylindrical batteries in the world — and the confusion between them is just as common. Both are 1.5V cells from the same chemistry families, but the size difference is not cosmetic: an AA stores two to three times the capacity of an AAA.
The size difference at a glance
| AA (LR6 / R6P) | AAA (LR03 / R03P) | |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 14 × 50 mm | 10.4 × 44.5 mm |
| Typical alkaline capacity | 1,800–2,900 mAh | 800–1,200 mAh |
| Weight (alkaline) | ~23 g | ~11.5 g |
| Chemistry | Alkaline / carbon zinc / NiMH | Alkaline / carbon zinc / NiMH |
See the pattern: same voltage, half the capacity. An AAA is essentially a smaller, lighter AA — and it is always worth asking whether the device actually accepts AA before buying the smaller cells.
What each one usually runs
AA batteries carry the heavy hitters: remote controls, game controllers, flashlights, wall clocks, smoke detectors, toys with motors. The higher capacity pays for itself in devices that draw real current.
AAA batteries belong to slim devices: TV remotes, small torches, portable audio, mini flashlights, electronics where the battery compartment is thin.
Which should you buy?
The rule is simple — match the compartment, not the device type. A remote control with a 2× AAA holder will not work with AA cells at all. Once the size is fixed, the real decision is chemistry:
- For low-drain devices (clocks, remotes): carbon zinc (R6P/R03P) is the economical choice.
- For high-drain devices (games, flashes): alkaline (LR6/LR03) — about 3–4× the capacity of carbon zinc.
- For rechargeable use: NiMH in both sizes exists, but check the device specifications first.
Buying in bulk — what the packaging means
Retail packs use two naming systems: S for shrink wraps (2S, 4S, 8S, 16S — families of shrink-wrapped cells) and BP or PCS for blister cards (2BP, 4BP, 8PCS — one blister per card). If you are buying for a supermarket shelf or a promotional pack, the system also tells you the fixture: shrink for peg displays, blister for gondola ends.
Wholesale volume? We ship AA and AAA as carbon zinc, super heavy duty and ultra alkaline — from 50 cartons with private label on every format. See wholesale pricing →.
The bottom line
AA and AAA are the same voltage, different sizes, and their capacity difference matters more than the label. Check the compartment first, then pick the chemistry tier for the device. If you are a brand or retailer building a battery line, start with the product ranges →.
